Program Summary

Eligibility Criteria/Requirements

  • Students who are currently enrolled full-time in Sociology, Psychology, Public Health, Medicine, Nursing,
    Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.00.
  • Two-year commitment to participate in the DHWS Program.
  • An interest in cardiovascular disease research.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

All candidates must submit an application, including a CV or resume, personal statement, three (3) letters of
recommendation (LOR), one from a faculty member, and an academic transcript.

Program Summary

The DHWSP is a 2-year mentored research training program.

  • During Year 1, didactic training will be provided with a focus on secondary data analysis and development
    of a manuscript proposal, utilizing JHS data, and scholars will attend a Summer Research Training Program.
  • During Year 2, scholars will be required to submit at least one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal for
    publication and attend a one-week community engagement workshop.
  • During year 1 and Year 2, scholars are required to attend at least 85% of DHWSP activities, including
    presenting an oral/poster presentation on Research Day.

As part of the mentoring, each DHW scholar will develop a Scholar/Mentor Research Work Plan Agreement.
The work plan will be dependent upon the scholar’s knowledge and skill.  The scholar and mentor will work
together to develop the scholar’s personal DHW scholar’s goals based on the scholar’s research skills.

  • Scholars are required to attend and participate in all activities listed below:

    • 3) Video Conferences
    • 4) JHS GTEC Daniel Hale Williams Scholars Brown Bag Luncheon
    • 5) JHS GTEC Daniel Hale Williams Scholars Quarterly Seminars
    • 6) Online Courses in Advanced Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Cardiovascular Epidemiology, Spatial Statistics, Research Methods, Social Determinants of Population Health
    • 7) Independent Research and Manuscript Development guided by a Mentor
  • The two-week Research Camp will consist of an intense program focused on increasing the overall quality of research, knowledge of academic research, and oral and written communication skills, and utilize didactic and interactive approaches.
  • Lectures and exercises will address critiquing scientific literature, scientific writing, enhancing skills in evaluation and statistics, designing epidemiological studies, and career opportunities in biomedical sciences.
