Welcome to the Richard Wright Writing Center for Writing, Rhetoric, and Research at Jackson State University. Our mission is to provide support and resources to help students become more confident, skilled, and independent writers.

Our Richard Wright Writing Center for Writing, Rhetoric, and Research offers a variety of services to students of all levels and disciplines. Our services include:

  • One-on-one writing consultations: Our writing consultants work with students at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to revising and editing.
  • Workshops and Writing groups: Our workshops and writing groups provide students with the opportunity to learn about different writing strategies and techniques in a supportive and collaborative environment.
  • Writing resources: Our website and online resources offer a wealth of information on writing skills and strategies, as well as tips for academic writing, research, and citation.

Kennedy Pierce, Undergraduate Writing Advisor

As an undergraduate student at Jackson State University, Kennedy is looking forward to helping her peers become more comfortable with the art of writing. Kennedy is studying Political Science with a concentration in Legal Studies. Her years of experience in student leadership and civic engagement have led her to have a passion for uplifting those in need. This passion coincided with her interest in research and writing, which has brought Kennedy to become a writing advisor at the Richard Wright Center.

Joanne Lebrun, Graduate Writing Advisor

Joanne earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Florida A&M University, and she is currently in the 1st year of her Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at Jackson State University. In the center, she enjoys connecting and assisting with both undergraduate and graduate student writers. She enjoys planning and creating papercrafts. You can find her exploring local parks around town and trying new foods. 

 

Dinan Noor, Graduate Writing Advisor

As a dedicated Graduate Writing Advisor at the Richard Wright Center, Dinan Noor is passionate about guiding and supporting students on their academic writing journey. Dinan is a medical graduate from Bangladesh, experienced in teaching medical students from diverse cultural backgrounds, now pursuing her doctoral degree in Epidemiology. With academic and professional experiences, she brings a wealth of knowledge and effective communication skills to help students refine their writing skills. Whether it is crafting compelling essays, structuring research papers, or honing their writing style, Dinan is committed to empowering students to express their ideas effectively and excel in their scholarly pursuits. Beyond academia, she embraces creativity in her free time, finding joy through various artistic endeavors.

Dedra Clark-Allen, Graduate Writing Advisor

Originally from Topeka, KS, Dedra Clark-Allen earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communicative Disorders from Jackson State University, a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Akron in Akron, OH, and a second Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS.  Dedra’s work in speech-language pathology, dyslexia, and intervention makes her particularly attuned to supporting students with disabilities and learning differences. Dedra is currently a doctoral candidate in JSU’s Early Childhood Education program, and in her free time enjoys watching documentaries, reading, and spending time laughing with her family.

 

Piper Lily, Graduate Writing Advisor

With a diverse educational background spanning Computer Engineering, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and ongoing studies in Psychometry with a focus in Education, Piper brings a unique blend of analytical and empathetic skills to her role as a writing advisor. Having previously served as a graduate writing advisor for a year, she has recently returned to this position with renewed enthusiasm. Her expertise lies primarily in APA formatted papers, research projects, and educational papers. She particularly enjoys assisting with resume building, sourcing research materials, and exploring personal or fictional writing projects.

Her tutoring approach is rooted in principles of inclusivity and equality. She believes in creating a safe and welcoming space for writers of all backgrounds and skill levels to express themselves freely and without judgment. As a therapist, she possesses a keen understanding of human behavior and needs, allowing her to connect with clients on a deeper level and tailor her guidance to their individual requirements.

Titilope Ruth Komolafe, Graduate Writing Advisor

Titilope Ruth Komolafe is enthusiastic and diligent in supporting students with their academic writing issues. She holds a PhD in Applied Biochemistry from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria, and is currently a graduate student in the Environmental Science PhD Program, demonstrating her dedication to continuous education. With an extensive background as an academic and researcher, she has developed excellent relationships with students, demonstrated topic expertise, adhered to course objectives, offered constant feedback, and smoothly blended writing skills into the academic experience. Ruth is passionate about helping students improve their writing skills while also supporting their overall educational and career development. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, singing, and reading science fiction.
